Hostel Warden Issues? Here’s how I resolved it

What’s her problem guys’? Do we live in a hostel or in a caged prison??”
“That’s true! The problem is she doesn’t WANT to listen to what we want to say. This happens like every alternate day and it puts me off almost most of the time dude!”
“I know right. This is annoying, I understand. But we need to confront this matter in front of her once. Let’s hear to out what she has to say about her behavior. Are you both in?”

Savita Tai, our hostel warden. As typical Indian girls-warden-hostel-conflict it would sound, perhaps yes, it indeed was. Not a bit different. The same late-nights-not-allowed issues, outsiders-are-prohibited issues, no-booze-parties problem, and boys’ entry?? Well, forget the whole body, not even their single trace of hair should be found on the premises. Phew! Something every hosteller dread in their hostel life. And one more thing: An exclusive grey act of bribing could land you up at home for straight 10 days. Suspension by college VCs. It surely was an open residential prison, so to say.
Now like every other youngster movie, between two groups of opponents, there was this particular person, who for her brilliant non-political diplomatic skills, could even go on to become a future Foreign Service officer in Embassies. Popularly called a mediator. And I was the one here, like always.
Why me? Because somewhere along the line I knew that Savita Tai exhibit dual personalities. Stern outside, soft within. Her apprehensions were always evident but not spoken and I being a decently good observer could look through her eyes. This developed a soft corner for her within me. Unfortunately, my roomies could not perceive this and so in order to resolve this issue once for all, I strategically decided to hatch a well-designed plan to bring both the revolting parties on one platform. The more time they would spend, the deeper they would understand each other’s vantage point.
The plan was- A three days girl’s only holiday trip. You guessed it right, Tai was included too.
I won’t even talk about how awfully challenging it was to convince everyone. In simple words, I had to take 2 tablets of crocin to cease an acute headache. But interestingly, my efforts brought in desired results and I immediately booked 4 tickets in “Women’s special Tours”. Fortunately, even the tour management coincided with my purpose with lots of group games, fun and engaging activities during the trip.
Starting was undoubtedly awkward, with two facing the left window and one facing the right. I sat in the middle, looking straight, thinking hard about my next step. Bingo! Got one.
A hardcore mountain trekking-2 advantages- Savita Tai being older would want a helping hand from us-And secondly this arduous trek would exhaust them greatly resulting in taking rest uphill with honest conversations. Perfect.
My plan worked. Yayy!
This feeling of achievement was instantly shrouded by a feeling of guilt within minutes of Tai narrating her secret story. Her life journey was the blunt answer to her strict demeanor. It was shocking to know how much pain she went through because of her daughter’s suffering. Her daughter is in the coma for past 1 year for no fault of her, but because of the cruelty inflicted by the society. That day, she talked her heart out to us. She left us with no words, only heavy tears. We sympathized with her, but most importantly, also made her feel secure that no matter what, we would always take care of ourselves. We gained her trust, she gained our unconditional respect. We became friends for life.
