Zindagi Na MilegiDobara – You Only Live Once!

I was what you would stereotype as a ‘tomboy’ during my growing years. A frizzy haired girl dotted with freckles on her cheeks, ‘Fearless Farah’ was my alliterative name in my school year book. My idea of ‘Living It Up’ was to don a t-shirt, shorts, a pair of sneakers and a baseball cap and go climb a tree, jump from a two –storey building, do wheelies on my BMX which eventually graduated to my brother’s Pulsar 220 when I turned all of 20.

But my ultimate high was and still remains going on hiking and trekking trips.
YOLO! - You Only Live Once is my motto.

Traveling with my brother’s gang every year, tomultiple places had become a ritual. It was sacrosanct. Valley of flowers - Uttarakhand, Araku Valley -  Andhra Pradesh, Dzongri - West Sikkim, Siang Valley – Arunachal Pradesh, Sandakphu Trek - West Bengal to name a few exhilarating treks with the gang.

The boys wouldn’t even think about taking a trip without me - I was one of the ‘Bhais’, the lucky charm. But my fate was decided on one such trip that almost brought my life to a standstill. That trek was very challenging and arduous but we were victorious and got awarded by the most fascinating view of the valley ever seen. On our way back was when a challenge uncalled for struck us. We got trapped for 3 days on that treacherous terrain due to a cloud burst. No mobile network, 2 energy bars and soaking wet selves on the verge of hypothermia. That trip was the deciding factor for my family to forbid me from hanging out with my brother’s pals.

2 years went by- I was a restless, miserable soul. I was losing my mind! How do you tie down a roaming spirit with an adventurous streak? I needed to bounce back to my old self that needed jaw dropping, ceaseless and enchanting experiences of Nature.

The sheer magic of embarking on a journey filled with amazing surprises that Mother Nature revealed to you was endless. Being off the grid made the traveler in me savor all that was nomadic, local and rustic. Capturing Shangri-La like moments on my DSLR and witnessing nature’s bounty was what I lived for! So I started searching for likeminded females who loved to trek so that I could soak myself in their documented voyages.

That’s when I came across “Women Special Tours” -  A #womenonlytour  group flashing on my Facebook adverts. There was a sweet buzzing sensation in my head and I grinned. If not with the boys, then with the girls, right? What the heck! I had to do this! And what a sweet surprise I tell you! Ten women, all adventure filled souls, all trekking enthusiasts and all like ME!

My first ever trip with an all women group and I was not sticking out like a sore thumb at all! I was gleefully happy like a ten year old having her favorite ice cream after an agonizingdentist’s appointment.

In hindsight, my adventurous spirit was given a new lease of life, reinventing itself for new associations and new places to explore. After all, ‘ZindagiNahiMilegiDobara’ aka YOLO! Do visit the website www.womenspecialtours.comif you are still having a hard time believing that this is real and a click away from giving wings to your wanderlust spirit. Here’s to more such experiences, more such trips together. Cheers!
