A Journey is Best Measured in Friends, than Miles.

You will always see them engrossed in delightful conversation and all ecstatically giggly and sometimes shocking everyone with their almost gut busting guffaws and chortles whenever they meet. Suhani, Rupal, Doris, Persis and Purobi are best friends since they were in school and are still going strong as ever. They are the yin to each other’s yangs. So bluntly honest with each other, despite disagreements, they never ever fell out even after six decades of this soulfully, entwined bonhomie. They have been through hilarious moments, heartbreaking losses, joyous celebrations and crazy adventures- just totally unstoppable soul sistahs!

Why do I know this? Because Doris is my grandmother! And she and her besties have been my sanctuary of all things grandmotherly since my diaper days. They put mine as well as our parent’s friendships to shame and we so envy them with dazed amazement for the 60 years they have remained best of friends. They all married within the same year, made a conscious decision of staying in the same city they were born and raised in. And surprisingly their life partners also valued and honored their friendship that even they happily set themselves to the rhythmic beat of their camaraderie. This esprit de corps was a force to reckon with everywhere they went. Their chumminess was so infectious that even strangers learnt a thing or two about friendship just by looking at them or over hearing one of their animated conversations.

There were many forces, some man-made and some through the hands of fate that tested their sisterhood but none prevailed. They always emerged unscathed as if they were true demigoddesses of Friendship.

So when they approached the 61st year of their togetherness they wanted to celebrate it in a very unconventional way and asked all their kith and kin for ideas. Everybody came up with suggestions, some crazy, hilarious and some too adrenaline rushing for their age and demeanor. This discussion had been going on for a week and none of them were getting any headway. That’s when I suggested they take an all girls cultural tour to South India covering all iconic places dotted with mesmerizing temples, cathedrals, breathtaking landscapes and soaked in its rich culture and heritage.

When they heard this, they just squealed in unison ‘Yes!’ taking me and others by total surprise! I saw another new dimension in their friendship – how they morphed into a single entity, their souls so synced up that it took them seconds to agree about travelling together.

So I helped these ‘giddy with excitement’ best baes book that 12 day Women travel group culture trip through this amazing travel agency called ‘Women Special Tours’. And off they went taking their friendship to the next level, each stepping out of their comfort zone buteach solidifying a strong foothold of their 61st year of togetherness.

With these gorgeous souls around me, they are the living and breathing encyclopedia of what friendship is all about. A zillion memories, a million anecdotes, thousand shared secrets, hundred disagreements and one reason – Best Friends!
