I practice medicine and compassion.
I had 3 days to myself due to the last minute
cancellation of the convention I was there for in Delhi. Since my accommodation
and meals were already managed by my office, I was quite relieved on that
front. I had already scouted every nook and corner of Delhi in previous travels
and did not want to waste my time in the premises of the hotel and nor did my
four female colleagues of the 10 member contingent from Vadodara.
We were a group of unmarried, young neurosurgeons
recently inducted into one of the newly initiated state of the art facilities dedicated
exclusively for the research of the human brain. Oh Boy! Didn’t know what I was
getting into when I majored in Neurosurgery after my MBBS degree. The work-life
balance was one rickety tightrope walk I say, even when we were not even
married. We didn’t know night from day most of the times due to long, arduous
hours either on research, rounds or assisting our seniors in the operating
room. We performed multiple operations in a single day, and most brain
surgeries are complex and last for hours. We might start the surgery at dawn
and not get off until 10 or 11 pm
.
Neurosurgeons all over the world are under constant
pressure and stress that we have to be extremely adept at managing intense
emotional situations with patients and their kin. Our profession makes it
imperative to display compassion and empathy apart from the super high level of
manual dexterity and coordination for surgical tasks. But the hardest thing is
delivering bad news. Nobody teaches you how to do that in medical college. There is no science or technology to draw
strength and solace from for the families of the patient. Sometimes, just holding
hands or giving a hug is what we do; if only that could take away all the
misery from this world. That is how fragile and precious life is. And that we
need to value this time limited commodity called Life.
So, do I love my job? You bet I do! It’s more than a job,
it’s a vocation. People from various facets of life inspire you to keep doing
what you do and that really lifts up my soul. And one way I get to know the
inner beauty of human souls is through travelling.
Sorry for the digression. So we neurosurgeons really look
forward to seminars and conventions, as those are our grounds to sharpen our
skills in neurosurgery and learning about medical breakthroughs, new therapies
and procedures to improve patient care. One such convention was this one which
to our utter dismay got cancelled.
The men in our team had plans in which we were not included
so we started looking for travel agencies who could give us a Ladies Travel Tour package at a reasonable
price and to someplace worth visiting. None came up with good offers except for
this agency named ‘Women Special Tours’.
They not only gave us a pocket friendly package on such a short notice but also
arranged conveyance to reach the airport on time. We went to the city of Amritsar,
‘Pool of Nectar of Immortality’. The Holy Golden Temple will restore your faith
in Humanity when you are there. And if you are in Punjab, how can you forget
about the food and the robust nature of Punjabis? You will definitely learn a
thing or two on how to celebrate life. It always amazes me how destinations are
rarely places but new ways of observing things and realizing how beautiful
creations we are.
So as a doctor I always say this, ‘You only live once.
But if you do it right, that once is enough.’
