What the ‘Women Special Tours’ taught me about friendship and travelling.

As the saying goes ‘A simple Hello can lead to a million things’, I learned very recently that travel broadens your perspective about people and life. After leading three very stressful years of a corporate cubicle urbanite I decided to quit and travel. Though being an urban professional my job required  very less interaction with colleagues and I preferred it that way, very comfy in that cocoon of a cubicle. If anybody wanted to be friendly with me, a nonchalant look or a crisp toned ‘Hi’ would do the job for me and I would be back clacking off on the keyboard of my work station. This eventually got me the reputation of being unable to socialize. Oh! How I hated that! Because I loved to be amongst people! It’s just that I am too shy and have an irrational fear to befriend someone, with a self-doubt that they just might not like me and reject me. So be it parties or soirees, I am the conventional wallflower.

After I quit, my mother suggested the mother lode of all encompassing fear- A trip to Kerala with a bunch of women! Women who are complete strangers and of varied personalities and age groups. Oh the horror! ‘Are you kidding me?’ I asked my mum. She just said, ‘If it scares you, it might be a good thing to try’. ‘Make this your goal. Because goals scare you a little and excite you A LOT’. I didn’t know who she was quoting but it did sound a hell of a lot inspirational to me. BTW, she had already booked a ticket for me in ‘Women Special Tours’.
And there I was on a flight to God’s own country with nine women travelers. It was a nail biting session in the entire flight thinking about how I would spend ten days with them. The first few hours were an exchange of awkward, with the big question of how we would accommodate each other in this journey of uncertainties. And then it happened…..the miracle by the resort’s poolside. This 20 something girl with lopsided burgundy curls, wearing an Aztec printed aquamarine kaftan walks up to me with a broad, dimpled smile, holds me and gives me a shake  and says, ‘Lady, you’ve got to start talking!, it’s now or never! If you want to make stories worth telling, you just can’t be in that shell of yours!’  Bam! Those words were like an epiphany that broke me out of this self connoted spell that I would never be a social person at all. I started an endless conversation with this gorgeous soul named Rhea and the rest followed. I discovered such energy and vibe surrounding each one of them, it started rubbing off on me and I began chatting away nonstop. I had so much to tell. I became a blabbermouth. I became a travel bug.
Thanks to ‘Women Special Tours’ I am always eager to embrace the chance of meeting new people when I travel with them.
