When Women Special Tours was Instrumental in my Reunion

When I saw her name in the itinerary, I whispered a little prayer of thanks to the Almighty. I was meeting my mother after 5 years finally! Courtesy Women Special Tours, a travel agency that custom crafts women only tours, I got to spend a precious and unforgettable 2 week holiday with my mother and a few other women in The Andamans.

Thanks to the constant coaxing by my husband to meet my mother and the wondrous coordination by Women Special Tours, I finally relented in sending a message across to my mother living 5000 miles away that I would love for us to spend a holiday together – just me and her.
You must be wondering what is so special about this mother-daughter getaway. Special it is and also very overwhelming because 5 years ago my mother broke all ties with me when I married my boyfriend of another faith.

She never approved of my relationship with Farhan and let me know about what she thought very vocally. We exchanged some really bitter words at each other the day Farhan came to ask my hand in marriage in our home. He was turned away and told to forget me. As for me, I was told that all ties would be broken off if I contemplate marriage with him. I tried to reason with her, speaking for Farhan that he is not what she thinks him to be, he respects me for who I am and we will be very happy together but nothing could change her mind.

During that tumultuous time I was going through the most wretched moments of a daughter who was raised by her mother raised single handedly through her teenage years after dad passed away. Torn between the unconditional, wholesome love of my mother and Farhan’s unquestionable commitment towards me I cried and prayed for days.

Both of them were a part of me but I had to take that step which eventually hurt my mother really hard – I married Farhan.

In a few days, we moved to Bangalore and I relentlessly kept writing emails to her, knowing full well she won’t reply to any of them. But deep inside I knew she wished me well and longed to talk to me, see me in person but the Taurean spirit in her would not relent.
Farhan on the other hand kept egging me on to continue writing to her during the times I felt like stopping this form of communication. Sometimes, he would type out the entire email when I felt that this was all a hopeless act in vain.

Five years went by without a single reply from her and I was pretty nearly at the end of my tether when he suggested something out of the ordinary. “An all women trip somewhere, so that mother not only meets you but also gets to spend a beautiful holiday together. Just you and her!” That day Farhan was very sure that my mother would agree to this idea and I would get a reply from her.
I kept shaking my head and apprehensively wrote a long email to my mother asking if she would like to go on a vacation with me to The Andamans, a place she always wanted to visit. Well! As Farhan had predicted, I heard my phone ping and we both ran towards my phone. She agreed! Oh! We jumped like kids and did a jig together….I knew then I had made the right choice marrying Farhan and wished if mom could see us now.

Our eyes met at the lobby of the hotel that was booked for the first lap of our Andamans Tour. She looked a bit frail in her ikat print saree, but I could still see the ever glowing ember of grit in her eyes. She stood there with open arms and I ran to her for that warm, soft hug that I was so longing for. With tears streaming from our eyes, and puzzled looks from our fellow team members, we mumbled together pointing at each other – my maa- my daughter. I got my ‘Maa’ back and she her ‘beta’ *always called me that.

We both stepped back and smiled at each other….then I took her hand and placed it on my tummy and told her she is the first person to know. With a gasp and streaming tears she kissed me on my cheeks and on my forehead and blessed me and my unborn baby.
Thank you Farhan my love and thank you Women Special Tours for making me reunite with my mother.
