A MUCH NEEDED WAKE-UP CALL.
Nishita and I live in the same city now. We are besties since kindergarten and have been in close proximity since then. But we have had our share of being parted as marriage, career, kids took first place over friendship and female bonding.
Life started revolving at such a pace where we would only connect once a week over the phone and simply exchange mundane, superficial pleasantries, when both of us knew deep in our hearts how shallow it had become of our emotions. We could see ourselves on camera and silently shake our heads at each other’s drained out, pallid and spiritless faces.
Imagine living in the same city and meeting once in two or three months – with the husbands and kids in tow! And in each other’s houses! You all must be rolling your eyes over how sad and lackluster lives we were leading!
Nope! I couldn’t tolerate it anymore and had to take matters into my hands! I decided to go on a vacation- Just the two of us! The realization of how badly we needed a break showed in my voice when I called Nishi and asked her to stop whatever she was doing at that moment and listen to me. Nishi went along fine with the suggestion of a holiday but all hell broke loose when I mentioned it would just be the two of us. We hadn’t even decided upon our destination when she already started hyperventilating. The thought of leaving our kids and respective husbands made her go on an imaginary massive guilt trip which was sacrilege according to her. Secretly, even I had the same inhibition but my fear of giving life to panicky situations by speaking out loud was a big no-no.
I told her that I was determined enough to even drag her out of her house this time and will not take a no for an answer. But I knew Nishi; she would be so stressed out to even discuss this with her husband that I volunteered to initiate the talk with him. And to her amazing surprise Nishant agreed and insisted she take that break with me. We both broke into hysterics just looking at Nishi’s jaw-dropped face. She had to be assured the second time by Nishant’s loving hug and nodding approval that he and the kids would be fine.
As far as my hubby’s reaction goes, he just nodded, smiled and said it was long overdue as he had always been a tolerant soul during my cribbing moments, listening to the rantings of what I can’t do because of the various roles I play in life as a wife, mother, homemaker and daughter-in- law.
A fuss-free week’s vacation was all that Nishi and I needed. We didn’t want to care about all the nitty-gritty’s of planning that goes into holidays. That is when ‘Women Special Tours’ comes into the picture, custom-crafting our getaway in the most caring way, totally perceiving how much we needed this break.
As we bid our ‘Au-revoirs’ at the airport to our kith and kin, we were both teary-eyed and giggly. Teary-eyed leaving our families behind and giggly at the prospect of what lay in store for us on this trip to Goa, the tranquil South Goa to be precise where white beaches and opal-green seas beckoned us.
Nishi couldn’t agree more about what this holiday did to us. It was the right antidote to a hectic, stressful life but most of all- the strengthening of our bond.
