When I Called Off My Engagement…

Breakups are heart-wrenching. And when it involves trust issues, it becomes sourer.” Just a few months back, I could never have understood the essence of these heavy lines. But one instance is enough to teach you everything about this subject matter. Are you a kind of person who always had this belief that your partner would never be distrustful towards you? Did you ever experience a breakup for the kind of relationship that you were SO SURE of from the starting days? If yes, how did you cope with that? Or most importantly, has your trust been shaken to such extent that it could not be repaired? If the answer to any of these dialogues is a simple affirmative nod, then this article is for you. Just give it a thoughtful read.
Rohit and I were best friends. Time would just fly off whenever we were together. One day he proposed me and I said yes. Three years of togetherness and loads of fights made our bond just inseparable. What was next? Marriage of course! No.
In a whiff instead, an event completely changed the course of our lives.
Demand for a dowry. Such a shame!
His family demanded it. He didn’t even say a word against it. Not even a word. Someone who had such matured upbringing had best of education from one of the finest Universities in the world, supposedly had no financial crunch, and most importantly, had charmed someone who considered him to be her first and the last love of her life.
His behavior devastated me, completely. I could not believe this was even happening with me. But as a proud papa’s daughter, I called off my engagement. With that, my smile vanished away too.
For days, I locked myself at home. Talked to no one. Only blamed my awful decision.
Seeing my condition getting worst, my family decided to revive back my lost confidence. Now when I look back, I saw myself acting so stupid. But at that point, only I could understand the pain that was brimming with me. No one but me.
A solo travel trip. Yes.
It was indeed sufficient to invigorate my dampened spirits. I half-heartedly agreed and they booked my tour with a company that specialized in “Women Travel tours”. Surprisingly, my father didn’t book my return ticket. Although it was a solo trip, I was accompanied by few other women- all of different age and background.
I had been an introvert throughout, but fortunately, they didn’t let me feel so. The whole trip to one of the beautiful hill station in India, on the lap of Himalayas by the name of Waknaghat in Himachal Pradesh. We would walk through the forest, trek those hilly terrains, dance in the rain, shop with the locals, visit holy shrines, stroll through isolated silent spots, give candid shots, hangout at roadside dhaba, read, talk and what not! I managed myself with such perfection. I emerged myself in nature. I cried my heart out, for the last ever time. Elements named worry, self-doubt, pity, and guilt left me alone, in peace. I felt so relieved. I surrendered my negativity and grasped all those teaching which nature had to offer me. After such a long time, I felt good. Really good.
